Alexis has lived in Saskatchewan, the West Indies, and Singapore and has resided in Edmonton since 1972. She graduated from of the University of Alberta with Bachelor of Education and Sciences Degrees. Alexis taught junior high school science for 15 years, all the while pursuing her art and instructing calligraphy.
